LA VERNE - Fresh off a great first SCIAC win (64-57) against Cal Lutheran (10-2, 1-2 SCIAC), the University of La Verne Leopards men's basketball team (5-6, 2-1 SCIAC) extended their winning streak with a 62-52 win against the Beavers of Caltech (1-11, 0-2 SCIAC).
Shooting 57.1 percent from the field in the opening half, the Leopards maintained solid offense going 12 for 21 in the field and 4 for 7 from the 3 point arc. The largest lead of the game (16 points) came in the first at 6:32 in favor of La Verne.
The second half was much like the first, with only 3 overall lead changes and one tie gmae. At 9:07 the Beavers pulled within 5. But Niall Harrison answered with an easy layup and secured the lead for the remainder of the game.
Weston Newell was the high scorer for La Verne with 13 points, closely followed by Harrison with 12 points and 5 rebounds.
Beaver Kc Emezie led both teams with 16 points and 4 rebounds.
La Verne (5-6, 2-1 SCIAC) will be back in action Wednesday, January 8th when they take on Claremont-Mudd Scripps at home. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
