The University of La Verne men's soccer team earned its second consecutive win with a 1-0 shutout victory over Whittier College Wednesday at Ben Hines Field.
Nahavi Mendoza broke a 0-0 deadlock with the game-winning goal midway through the second half.
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the first half, but big
saves were made by Leopard goalie Jonathyn Lomeli and Poet Taylor
Ayres. The teams combined for 12 shots, but the score would
remained knotted at halftime.
The Leopards finally caught a break when Mendoza took advantage of
a botched clear-out, blasting a shot past Ayres to give La Verne a
1-0 lead they would not relinquish. Both teams became more
aggressive in an attempt to take control of the game, resulting in
15 total second half fouls and three yellow cards (ULV: Parada,
Mejia; WC: Hartsough).
La Verne now moves into a 5-way tie for first place in conference with a 2-1 league record. The Leopards will look for their third consecutive win against the Beavers from Caltech Saturday in Pasadena. Start time is 11 am.
