The University of La Verne softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, falling by scores of 9-5 and 9-4 Friday afternoon in Claremont.
In the opener, the Leopards led 4-1 before CMS collected three runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game at 4-4. La Verne would retake the lead with a run in the top of the sixth to go up 5-4, but the Athenas pushed across five runs in the bottom half to seize victory.
Dee Dee Burns paced the Leos on offense with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate with a homer and double along with 3 RBI. Daryn Schiveley went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Michelle Brody led the Athenas with a pair of hits and 4 RBI.
In the second game, La Verne jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning only to watch CMS counter with four runs in the bottom half of the frame to grab a 4-2 advantage. La Verne would draw even with a run in both the third and fourth innings. Jackie Duran's solo homer in the top of the fourth knotted the game at 4-4.
The Athenas again would pull away with a five-run inning, this time in the fifth, to provide the final margin of victory in a 9-4 final.
Brody led the Athena efforts with 3 RBI in the game for a total of seven in the doubleheader.
CMS improves to 21-9 overall and 13-3 in conference play. La Verne drops to 15-13 and 7-9, respectively.
The Leopards resume action Saturday as they host Cal Lutheran at Wheeler Park on Senior Recognition Day. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 12:00 pm.
