Softball Drops Twinbill To Athenas

The University of La Verne softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, falling by scores of 9-5 and 9-4 Friday afternoon in Claremont.

In the opener, the Leopards led 4-1 before CMS collected three runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game at 4-4.  La Verne would retake the lead with a run in the top of the sixth to go up 5-4, but the Athenas pushed across five runs in the bottom half to seize victory.

Dee Dee Burns paced the Leos on offense with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate with a homer and double along with 3 RBI.  Daryn Schiveley went 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Michelle Brody led the Athenas with a pair of hits and 4 RBI.

In the second game, La Verne jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning only to watch CMS counter with four runs in the bottom half of the frame to grab a 4-2 advantage.  La Verne would draw even with a run in both the third and fourth innings.  Jackie Duran's solo homer in the top of the fourth knotted the game at 4-4.

The Athenas again would pull away with a five-run inning, this time in the fifth, to provide the final margin of victory in a 9-4 final.

Brody led the Athena efforts with 3 RBI in the game for a total of seven in the doubleheader.

CMS improves to 21-9 overall and 13-3 in conference play.  La Verne drops to 15-13 and 7-9, respectively.

The Leopards resume action Saturday as they host Cal Lutheran at Wheeler Park on Senior Recognition Day.  The first game of the doubleheader begins at 12:00 pm.
