LA VERNE – Ronn See and Karl Reyes each scored 11 points, but Pomona-Pitzer used a big run in the middle of the second half to defeat the University of La Verne men's basketball team, 65-59, on Wednesday night at the Franz Athletic Court.

With the loss, La Verne (10-14, 7-8 SCIAC) drops out of the SCIAC Postseason contention. Pomona-Pitzer improves to 17-7 overall and 12-3 in conference play.

The Leopards kept the game tight throughout, but the Sagehens made three quick baskets in about a 1-minute span midway point of the second half to pull away. After a pair of Kendall McClain free throws brought the Leos within 43-41, John Weiss made a layup, Adrian Brandon hit a jump shot and Kyle McAndrews sank a three to stretch Pomona-Pitzer's lead to 50-41.

La Verne made a late rally and cut the deficit to five points on two different occasions with a Ronn See jumper with 54 remaining and another jumper by Evan Roberts with 23 seconds left, but it was too little, too late.

Both teams looked tight to start the game. Neither team shot the ball well and neither broke the 10-point mark until about 7 minutes into the game when Xavyr Moss hit a jumper to give the Sagehens a 10-8 lead. The teams traded baskets the rest of the half until the Leopards went on a small run led by Reyes and Kendall McClain to take a 32-29 lead going into the break.

La Verne limited Pomona-Pitzer to just 37 percent shooting in the first half.

McAndrews led all scorers with 32 points. Weiss pitched in 10, and Brandon had seven points and six rebounds for the Sagehens.

See did a little bit of everything as usual. The senior guard scored 11 points, grabbed two rebounds and gave out four assists. He recorded three steals and a blocked shot for a good mesure

Eric Becker contributed 9 points and 7 rebounds. McClain finished eight points and made two 3-pointers.

La Verne returns to action on Saturday at 5 p.m. when they host Chapman on Senior Night.
