La Verne Women's Basketball Falls to Cal Lutheran

LA VERNE – Shannon Irwin, Emily Myers and Lindsey Foster all scored in double digits.

But the University of La Verne women's basketball team could not overcome Cal Lutheran's 16-of-21 second-half free throws as they lost 63-47 on Saturday night at the Franz Athletic Court.

La Verne falls to 12-9 overall and 7-5 in SCIAC play. Cal Lutheran improves to 12-9 and 8-5.

The Leopards were competitive until the midway point of the second half. Irwin and Myers led an early charge out of the break with 10 combined points as La Verne erased a 7-point first half deficit and led 39-38 with 13:40 to go in the game.

But the 50-50 calls seemed to start going in Cal Lutheran's way after that. The Regals attempted 18 of their 21 second-half free throws from that point on made 14 of them as they pulled away.

Sofia Cruz alone out-attempted the Leos as she sank 7 of her 8 freebies in the second half. Haley Hodgson was 5 for 5.

The Leopards pressed, too, and forced 24 turnovers, but could not capitalize on them.

Irwin finished the game with 10 points and six rebounds. Foster scored 14 to go along with two rebounds and three assists. Tiffany Hicks dished out a game-high five assists and hauled in four rebounds.

Myers extended her streak of double-figure scoring to four games with 12 points. The sophomore center also grabbed seven rebounds, gave away three assists and recorded a steal.

Cal Lutheran's Chelsea Jacoby who had recorded a double-double in the teams' previous meeting on Dec. 12, notched another with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Cruz led the game with 17 points and Hodgson added 13 for Cal Lutheran.

La Verne is now locked in a battle with Cal Lutheran for a SCIAC Postseason Tournament berth. The Regals lead the Leopards by half a game, but the Leos have a game in hand.

The Leopards return to action at Whittier on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
