CLAREMONT -- Emily Myers had a career-high 24 points but the shots just didn't fall for the rest of the University of La Verne women's basketball team as it lost 74-51 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday night at the Ducey Gymnasium.
La Verne drops to 8-6 in SCIAC play and 13-10 overall. CMS improves to 12-2 in conference and 20-2 overall.
The Leopards shot just 23.7 percent from the field, but kept the game close into the second half by attacking the basket and drawing fouls. La Verne made more free throws (19) than CMS attempted (18).
La Verne started slow but stayed patient, got to the rim and earned enough free throws to tie the game at 17-17 with about nine minutes left in the first half. Myers then made a couple of shots, Gaby Moura-Hayes knocked down a three and the Leopards stayed within range.
Myers tied the game again at 35-35 with a midrange jumper at about the 16:22 mark in the second half, but then the lid closed on the basket for the Leopards and CMS went on a 20-2 run in the next 10 minutes to effectively put the game away. CMS shot 5 of 7 from downtown during that stretch.
In addition to her career-high in points, Myers brought down career-best eight offensive rebounds.
Tiffany Hicks scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Lindsey Foster contributed five points and six boards.
Angelina Arreola had four points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Kimberly Scamman had a near triple-double for the Athenas, registering 15 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists.
Madeline Barnes led all scorers with 22 and Claire Donnelly chipped in 11 off the bench.
With the loss, La Verne falls into a fourth-place tie with Cal Lutheran with two games left against Pomona-Pitzer (5-9 SCIAC) and Chapman (12-2). If the Leopards win out and Cal Lutheran loses one of its last two, they will snag the last spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. If the Regals also win out, the two teams will be involved in a tiebreaker.
La Verne hosts Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
