There was plenty of offense to go around for the University of La Verne men's basketball squad Friday night as the Leopards hit the century mark in a 102-83 triumph over Pacifica College at Frantz Athletic Court.
Hot shooting was the catalyst in the win as the Leopards shot 52.3% from the field and connected on 11 three-point field goals en route to their third consecutive win to improve to 3-1 on the season. Additionally the Leos dominated the boards by out-rebounding Pacifica 51-29 on the night.
La Verne built a 25-point lead in the first half en route to a 53-30 cushion at halftime. The Leopards shot 43.9% from the field in the first 20 minutes of play and held the Gladiators to a 23.1%.
The Leopards continued their momentum after the break to build leads of 60-32 and 73-41 before enjoying their largest lead of the game at 39 points in seizing a 87-48 advantage with 10:05 remaining in the contest.
With most of the La Verne starters resting the finals 10 minutes, Pacifica finished the game on a 34-12 run to narrow the margin.
Tyler Hoyt paced La Verne in scoring with 18 points as he finished 4-of-7 from the field including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Alex Wolpe contributed 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting which included two dunks. Wolpe also posted 9 rebounds.
Both Trevor Woodland and Austin Napolitano finished with 14 points. Woodland hit 4 three-pointers while Napolitano tallied a double-double by grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds.
Jeremy Lay also got in on the offensive explosion by finishing a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range to finish with 9 points.
Pacifica's Julius Armon finished with a team-high 28 points in the loss.
The last time a La Verne basketball squad reached the 100-point mark occurred on January 20, 2007, when the Leopards totaled 104 points against Redlands.
La Verne returns to action Wednesday night to face Chapman University at Frantz Athletic Court. Tip-off is 7:00 pm.
