The University of La Verne placed a total of eight players on the 2011 All-SCIAC Football Team as voted on by the league coaches.
The Leopards were represented by Fillip Marcelin and Alex Barrios on the First Team with teammates Kyle Appleford, Matthew Biggers, Christian Winnewisser, Nick Gutierrez, Arsian Erdinc and Alex Miller earning Second Team honors.
A senior linebacker from Rancho Cucamonga, Marcelin ranked second in the SCIAC in total tackles with 89 (including 42 solo stops) for an average of 9.9 per game. He also recorded 10 tackles for losses along with 4 sacks on the season. Barrios, a junior defensive end from West Covina, registered 4 sacks to tie for third among SCIAC leaders en route to a First Team All-Defense selection.
La Verne's Second Team All-SCIAC Offense selections included Appleford (offensive line), Biggers (running back) and Winnewisser (tight end) while Gutierrez (defensive line) and Erdinc (defensive back) were Second Team All-SCIAC Defense honorees. Miller (placekicker) also earned a spot on the All-SCIAC Second Team.
A senior from Brea, Appleford earns his third All-Conference selection for his career after anchoring the Leopard offensive line. Biggers earned his first All-Conference nod after compiling 617 rushing yards on the season which included three games of 100 yards or more. The sophomore from Riverside notched a career-high 235 yards against Pomona-Pitzer on November 5 to merit a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week. A converted quarterback, Winnewisser hauled in 21 passes for 314 as a tight end. The product from Santa Barbara tallied a career-high 112 yards on 7 receptions against Pomona-Pitzer.
A freshman from Chino, Gutierrez helped bolster the Leopard defense, totaling 4 sacks to tie for team-high honors. Erdinc excelled from his safety position, finishing second on the team in total tackles with 61. The senior from Novato also tallied a team-high 3 interceptions to rank fourth in the conference.
Miller ranked fifth in the SCIAC in scoring with 43 points on the year. The sophomore from Upland also went 7-11 in field goal attempts while finishing a perfect 22-22 in PAT attempts.
La Verne finished the 2011 season with a 4-5 overall record while posting a 3-3 mark in conference play.
