Four Leopards named to All-SCIAC Football Team

Four members of the University of La Verne football squad were recognized on the 2010 All-SCIAC team released Wednesday by the league office.

Wardell Campbell earned a First Team All-SCIAC selection while teammates Kyle Appleford, Matt Griffin and Jorge Villagomez each received Second Team honors.

A sophomore linebacker from Riverside, Campbell registered 51 tackles (18 solo) on the season, including 8.5 tackles for losses.  He also recorded two sacks and one interception.

A senior defensive end from Pomona, Villagomez earns an All-Conference selection for the second straight season after garnering First Team honors in 2009.  This season, Villagomez collected 52 tackles (21 solo) along with 12 tackles for losses.  He led the team in sacks with 4.5 and forced one fumble.

Appleford also earns an All-Conference selection for the second straight season after a Second Team nod in 2009.  A junior offensive lineman from Brea, Appleford helped anchor the Leopard O-line during the 2010 campaign, yielding only two sacks in 309 pass attempts the entire year.

Griffin earns his first selection to the All-SCIAC squad.  The junior wide receiver from Santa Cruz was the primary passing target for the Leopards in 2010 with team highs of 57 receptions, 727 yards and 8 touchdowns.

La Verne finished the 2010 season tied for fourth place in the SCIAC standings after defeating Whittier 49-23 in the season finale on November 13.
