University of La Verne head football coach Andy Ankeny has been relieved of his duties effective today, announced by Director of Athletics Julie Kline. A national search to fill the vacant position will begin in the coming weeks.

"We are grateful for Coach Ankeny’s contributions over the past four seasons, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors," said Kline.

Ankeny, who was hired prior to the 2007 season, compiled a 4-32 record during his four years coaching the Leopards. His team finished 1-8 that first season, with Ankeny earning his initial career victory against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Nov. 3 of that year.  He followed with a 2-7 mark in 2008 and a 0-9 campaign in 2009. The Leopards went 1-8 in 2010, ending the season with a 49-23 victory at Whittier College on Nov. 13.

“We recognize there were positive developments made with the football program during the last four years, both from an academic and athletic perspective,” said Kline.  “However, we have high expectations for all 18 of our sport programs and we will continue to work towards those expectations.

“At this time we feel a change in leadership is needed to elevate the program to the next level as it relates to competitiveness,” said Kline. “We believe this change will allow us to bring a new vision and direction to the program.”

Assistant football coach Brent Baier will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Leopard football program during the transition process.

The University of La Verne is a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and fields 18 teams (nine men’s and nine women’s).   The athletic program is dedicated to developing scholar-athletes who demonstrate a commitment to academic and athletic success.
