Despite a 300-yard passing performance from Leopard quarterback Thomas Arguello, it was the Cal Lutheran offense that sparkled as the University of La Verne fell to the Kingsmen by a 49-21 margin in SCIAC action Saturday in Thousand Oaks.
The Kingsmen offense controlled first-half action, recording touchdowns on five of their first seven possessions en route to a 35-7 lead at intermission. CLU quarterback Jake Laudenslayer threw for 283 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Arguello countered with his first career 300-yard passing game, completing 26 of 45 attempts without an interception.
Arguello twice connected with Griffin for the game's final two scores. Griffin caught a 5-yard pass from Arguello in the final seconds of the third quarter to cap an 11-play, 54-yard drive to close the gap to 49-14.
Midway through the fourth, Griffin hauled in a 15-yard pass from Arguello for a score to provide the game's final margin. The scoring drive covered 77 yards on 6 plays.
CLU, ranked #21st in the latest d3football.com Top 25 Poll, jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, as Kingsmen running back Deme'Trek Chambers scored on a 2-yard run followed by an 8-yard pass from Laudenslayer. In the second quarter, Laudenslayer hooked up with Carlton Richard on a 47-yard scoring strike with 8:47 left before the half. With 1:36 left, Laudenslayer hit Eric Rogers from 30 yards out for a 28-0 advantage.
The Leopards scored their only first-half touchdown in the final minute of the second quarter, taking the ensuing kickoff and driving 63 yards on six plays with Arguello connecting with Matt Griffin for a 15-yard touchdown with 44 seconds left.
La Verne followed with an onside kick that was recovered by CLU with 42 seconds left, leading to a Laudenslayer TD pass to Max Eller for an 18-yard touchdown to give the Kingsmen a 35-7 advantage at the break.
Cal Lu (4-1, 3-0 SCIAC) opened the third quarter with consecutive scoring drives, first on a 3-yard run from Chambers and later on a 29-yard scamper from Matt Hamlett. The Kingsmen finished the day with 111 rushing yards.
For La Verne (0-5, 0-3 SCIAC), Griffin finished with 9 grabs for 98 yards and 3 touchdowns while teammate Allen Daniels caught 8 passes for a game-high 131 yards.
On defense, La Verne's Jorge Villagomez posted a game-high 3 sacks while Jimmy Morin totaled 8 solo tackles.
La Verne continues action with its annual non-conference tilt against Chapman next Saturday in Orange.
